« The National Library operates closed-access book stacks which means users cannot browse the shelves to obtain material. Requested items are delivered to the Reading Rooms via the Collection Delivery Service, and may be made available for immediate use or reserved for later.

Registration is available to anyone residing in Australia. Library cards are valid for two years. Having a library card enables you to place an electronic request for material via the online catalogue. Items can only be used in the Reading Rooms and are not to be taken from the library. Having a library card also allows you to access a selection of licensed databases over the Internet, via the Library's eResources homepage.

To register, complete the online form at:

https://www.nla.gov.au/getalibrarycard/registration?rg_location=offsite

After completing the form you can choose whether to collect your library card in person from the National Library or have your card mailed to you at your Australian residential address (please note library cards cannot be mailed to Post Office boxes).

You will be able to order collection material and search online databases when you receive your library card.
